INTRODUCTION: PRAYER 101 - A JOURNEY INTO INTERCESSION

“The prayer of the righteous man is powerful and effective.”   James 5:16

An intercessor is one who “stands in the gap” on behalf of other individuals, families, congregations, communities, cities, and nations.  In order to effectively stand in the gap it is absolutely essential that the praying soul recognizes the vital connection between their LIFESTYLE and the EFFECTIVENESS of their prayers.

Over and over again the scriptures give us clear exhortation of the need for intercession.  From Moses standing in the gap on Mount Sinai (Exodus 32) for the nation of Israel during their formative stage, to Daniel pleading the promises of God from the writings of Jeremiah (Daniel 9).  Many sincere souls have launched out into a life of intercession for others, but have not truly understood the connection between their own lifestyle of obedience and consecration to God and the effectiveness of their prayers.

God’s desire has always been for a people who are living whole-heartedly for Him.  A people absolutely surrendered and abandoned to His will and His ways.  Only as we are walking in God’s will, are we truly in a position of authority to stand on behalf of others and call them to the same place where we are living.

It is this lack of true abandonment to God’s Spirit (especially in the western world) that has caused so little fruitfulness in the church of our day.  Whether that be in the many attempts at ministry that have yielded so little long-lasting fruit, or the many prayers that have been prayed that seem to go unanswered.  Much of our ineffectiveness can be explained by the fact that we are not presently living in such a way that the blessings of God are commanded.

“The Lord is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous.”    Proverbs 15:29

By receiving a deeper revelation of God’s Holiness and Justice we come to see just how crucial it is that we first allow His Spirit to do a much deeper work in us.  Only then can we expect to be truly effective in reaching out to others.  In order for us to enter into greater fruitfulness we must have a revelation of what God expects of His people.

Join us on a journey into the lifestyle that God searches the earth to locate.  (Ezekiel 22:30)  These sessions are designed for individual study as well as for group study.  As an individual you may work through the sessions at your own pace leaving adequate time for plenty of prayer.  As a small group, or even a larger congregation, you may consider taking one session per week.  We encourage you to go beyond mere discussion, and instead seek to actively engage God in prayer as a corporate group.  Learn by doing.

Our prayer is that during the time we go through these resources together: Reading the Word of God, listening to the audio messages, viewing the video clips, and reading the writings of those who have paved the way long before us, we will be inspired to live in such a way that our prayers are just as powerful and effective as the Elijah’s were in his day.  God bless you as we embark on this journey together.

Sincerely yours,

    General Instructions:

  • Time commitment per session – Approx. 1 ½ - 2 hours

  • Recommended materials for course:  Computer with internet connection (to download media), Headphones, Bible, pen/pencil, notebook/journal.  We encourage you to have a notebook handy and to take notes as you go through the various resources.  Often it will be these reflections that God’s Spirit uses to speak to your heart even after the session is over.  (For those technically inclined souls who own an MP3 player - you may consider taking the time at the start of the course to simply download all of the audio files and place them on your MP3 player.  This will allow the sessions to always be nearby)

  • At the start of the course: Download the book - With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray.  (Consider purchasing enough paper to print this off so you can underline/write notes as you go through it – Total of 147 pages)

  • Word of Caution:  It is almost always in prayer that we truly take hold of the things that God’s Spirit has been speaking to our hearts.  Be weary of merely going through this course to acquire more head knowledge.  Make sure to take the time to pray through until what God has revealed to you through each session begins to become a heart-level reality.  These times of prayer are often where REAL LIFESTYLE CHANGE begins.  Lifestyle change is the ultimate goal.  Far too often we can go through material but if we are not careful we miss the main reason why God placed it in our path – Lifestyle change.
